Bring the savage dragons and civil war of House Targaryen from the books by George RR Martin
Dragon House gets a lot more dragons in its second season, according to showrunner Ryan Condal. At an awards dinner on Tuesday attended by several cast members of the show and series writer George RR Martin himself, Condal confirmed that season 2 of the show will add five new dragons to the programming already present in the show.
While Condal didn’t explain much about the identities or riders of these five dragons, his comment may still provide a clear clue to a plotline from Martin’s novels that might be relevant in Season 2. Dragon House adapted and expanded on the story featured in Martin’s Game of Thrones prehistory book Fire & Blood, which exposes some of the backstory of the Targaryen dynasty. The New Dragons suggest that Condal might be aiming for some specific storylines in this book.
(Ed. note: This story contains possible spoilers for season 2 of Dragon House and final spoilers for Fire & Blood.)
While there are certainly plenty of possibilities that five Condal dragons could be talking about, especially if they’re not all fighting dragons, it’s most likely he’s talking about dragons having key roles in the book. The most important in the story are the wild dragons.
In Fire & Blood, House Targaryen’s ancestral island of Dragonstone features three savage dragons that roam the area, ready to pounce and eat anything unfortunate enough to come in their way. These three dragons are Sheepstealer, Gray Ghost, and the Cannibal – so named because it has eaten so many other dragons, a rare thing for their species.
While it’s not fair for the series to reveal just how integral these creatures are to the story, what’s going on with them, or who rides them (or not), it’s worth noting that they’re extremely important to Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire book series. If Condal plans to include them in the series, that suggests he’ll move forward with the series’ Targaryen civil war plot, bringing us closer to dragon dogfighting and open warfare known as name of Dance of Dragons. The show’s first season is only a short section of the book, leaving the larger battles of the war for later seasons.
Other dragons that Condal might be referring to include Fire & Blood‘s Tessario and Moondancer, which would round out the total nicely. These two are both family dragons in the Targaryen arsenal.
While Condal’s “five new dragons” reference is but a meager tease for Dragon House fans, this is probably as good as we’re going to be for a while. There’s no official word yet on a release date for Season 2 of the series, meaning it likely won’t arrive until 2024 at the earliest. In case you needed a little more consolation, Martin mentioned that he hasn’t been on the Dragon House at all, mainly because he’s working on a new book you may have heard of.
