And on Sunday night, Jane Fonda, 85, admitted she regretted not being “the kind of mother” she would have liked to be to her children.
The actress has three children: Vanessa Vadim, 54, with ex-husband Roger Vadim, 95, Troy O’Donovan Garity, 49, with ex-husband Tom Hayden, 83, and Mary Luana Williams, 55 years old, whom she adopted with Tom.
The Hollywood icon spoke to CNN’s Chris Wallace about her biggest fears in life and her biggest regrets.
Jane confessed: ‘I wasn’t the kind of mother I would have liked to be to my children. I have very, very good kids – talented, smart – and I just didn’t know what to do.
She added: “I know what it’s supposed to be now, I didn’t know it then. So I try to show myself now.
Discussing her fears, the actress admitted, “What really scares me is coming to the end of life with a lot of regrets when there is no time to do whatever. it would be.
“And that’s one of the reasons why I try, I try to do everything before I get to the end.”
In November, Jane claimed her passion for activism had impacted her family life.
The Barefoot In The Park star said: “I think about motherhood every day. It’s the main thing from my past that I think about almost every day.
“And I’ll tell you, one of the things that keeps me from playing is watching my son. They just had their first child. And when I watch my son and his wife Simone parent, I’m amazed.
“It relieves me so much, which I did not do. I don’t think I told him that, so I feel a little weird, but anyway, that’s the reality.
Jane said she was ‘too engrossed’ in her activism during her younger years and added: ‘Watching my son be a parent, I think, ‘God, I just wish I had done that. And then I realize that if I had done that, I wouldn’t have become what I have become.
The Hollywood star celebrated his 85th birthday on December 21 and urged young people not to fear growing old.
She told People: “I’ve lived a great life. I’ve lived a productive, intentional life. And I knew I couldn’t make it longer than I expected, but I could make it bigger and deeper. And I did. I feel like I did that.
“I hope I can be an example for young people so that they are not afraid of growing old.”
Jane is well known for her environmental activism and she is determined to do whatever she can to help stop climate change.
She explained: “It’s going to be tough for young people, and I just want my kids to know and my grandkids to know that I did my best.”
