Photos taken on the set of Joker: Folie à Deux reveal that star Joaquin Phoenix won’t be the only Clown Prince of Crime to appear in the sequel.
Joker: Madness for Two seems to feature several Clown Princes of Crime.
Stills from the shoot by director Todd Phillips Joker (2019) the show’s sequel Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/Joker, except he’s not alone. While Phoenix is wearing a dirty suit and his Joker makeup is all messed up, he can be seen alongside another actor dressed as Arthur appears at the end of the original film, wearing a bright red suit with green hair and clown makeup. Other photos captured show Phoenix running away from that other Joker and someone else, but whether the third person is another Joker, cast or crew member is unclear based on available footage. .
These aren’t the first images to surface from the set of Joker: Madness for Two either. The first one Joker ended with Arthur Fleck incarcerated in Arkham Asylum, but other photos from the set of the sequel reveal that he will once again be free in Gotham, with the Gotham City Police Department (GCPD) on the streets as well . Arthur’s classic Joker appearance from the original film was seen in these other images, but with the revelation that more than one Joker was spotted on set, it’s possible that Phoenix wasn’t made up.
Joker 2 casts Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn
While Phoenix won’t be the only Joker in Madness for Two, he also won’t be the only iconic DC clown in the film. Singer-actress Lady Gaga has been cast as Harley Quinn in the sequel, the Joker’s girlfriend in the comics and other media. On February 14, as a Valentine’s Day gift for fans, Phillips shared a first look at Gaga as Harley Quinn. The image showed her up close for an intimate photo with Phoenix, her makeup smudged in the same way as in set photos that have surfaced.
Joker 2 is a musical love story outside of the main DCU
According to a Joker: Madness for Two synopsis, the film will follow Harley’s classic origin as an Arkham psychiatrist who falls in love with the Joker in the asylum, except this love story will be more of a musical. The synopsis simply reads, “The musical sequel follows Harley Quinn, Arkham Asylum’s shrink, who falls in love with her patient Arthur Fleck, aka Joker.” Despite this, another report claims that Gaga’s version of Harley Quinn will instead be a patient in Arkham alongside Arthur, and that the Joker sequel films multiple endings.
Joker: Madness for Two will fall under DC’s Elseworlds banner. Although DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have drawn up a multi-year plan of various projects for the connected DC Universe, others like Joker and director Matt Reeves The Batman franchise will exist in their own universes. Joker: Madness for Two is set to hit theaters on October 4, 2024.
