Justin Bieber appeared to throw shade at his ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez amid claims she was feuding with wife Hailey Bieber.
The singer threw a party for his 29th birthday over the weekend where he celebrated with his loved ones.
One person not on the guest list was his ex Selena, although he appeared to reference the actress with the gifts he gave out that day.
Guests received a silver keepsake that bore the words, “I’m so grateful I didn’t end up with what I thought I wanted.”
Although Justin didn’t address the meaning of the gift, fans were quick to assume it was a dig at his ex and called the singer “small.”
They tweeted: “This gift says to me ‘still living in the past’”; ‘So he says he didn’t want her?’; “and everyone was looking for his answer and he just gave you one as a gift”; ‘What is he trying to say?’;
“That’s so petty I mean if that’s how you and your wife feel keep this little shit to yourself lol and please don’t need to mention anyone’s name ‘one or say “who” to understand exactly what they are talking about. ;
‘Admitting your wife was your second choice on your birthday is crazy lmao selena really lives in her mind rent free’; “Oh, he’s getting mean!” Iktr defend your wife.
Other fans were quick to point out that it might have more innocent connotations, saying, “I can’t believe people interpret this negatively.” Justin says he’s grateful for the life he has as it is.
‘it’s true that it literally refers to being out of the spotlight.’
MailOnline has contacted Justin’s rep for a comment.
Selena and Justin dated for eight years, last calling it quits in 2018. Two months later, Justin proposed to Hailey, who he first dated in 2015 for about a month.
Fans have long pitted the women against each other and they’ve been accused of subtly throwing shade at each other.
Shortly after Justin was accused of throwing shade, Selena appeared to address the drama as she took to TikTok to call on people to “be kind” and insisted she “wants only good for everyone”.
Underneath a video of herself doing a makeup tutorial, she wrote, “Thank you and I love you all so much. I am deeply grateful to each and every one of you humans. You make me incredibly happy.
A second comment read, “Please be kinder and consider the mental health of others. My heart has been heavy and I only want good for everyone. All my Love.’
The drama began after footage surfaced of Hailey mocking Taylor Swift while she co-hosted Drop The Mic.
Fueling the flames, Selena commented on the video: “So sorry my best friend is and continues to be one of the best in the game.”
Afterwards, netizens started calling Hailey a “mean girl” as she also shared a TikTok video of herself with Kendall Jenner and Justine Skye in lip sync with an audio message saying, “I’m not saying that she deserves it, but I ‘I say God’s timing is always good.’
TikTok commenters took the now-deleted clip to correlate it to the body shaming and hate Selena has received recently.
Hailey’s close friend Kylie Jenner has also come under scrutiny lately after she shared an Instagram post seemingly mocking Selena.
Selena had shared a video on social media revealing that she had “rolled her eyebrows too much”, and a few hours later, Hailey and Kylie shared a screenshot showing their eyebrows during a video call.
Kylie and Selena were quick to respond to the hate and left comments ending the rumors and insisting there was no beef.
Still, fans weren’t convinced and at that time times Selena overtook Kylie as the most followed woman on Instagram.
Selena took to TikTok Live on Thursday to reveal she was taking an internet sabbatical and temporarily deactivated her TikTok account for a brief period. His TikTok and Instagram are currently active.
She said: “I’m going to take a second off social media because it’s kinda silly and I’m 30. I’m too old for that.”
“But I love you guys so much and I’ll see you sooner rather than later. I’m just going to have to take a break from everything.
