NHL trade deadline: Flyers sell Zack MacEwen to Kings for draft pick Brendan Lemieux

VOORHEES, NJ — In their first deal of Friday’s trade deadline, the Flyers traded restricted free agent Zack MacEwen to the Kings.

In exchange for MacEwen, the Flyers received winger Brendan Lemieux and a 2024 fifth-round pick.

MacEwen, a 26-year-old winger, was just activated from injured reserve on Friday after recovering from a broken jaw that required surgery.

The hard-nosed fourth line had been out since late January after sustaining an injury in a fight against Wild’s Marcus Foligno. He struggled often during his two season games with the Flyers, who claimed him off waivers in October 2021.

In 46 games with the Flyers this season, MacEwen has played a career-high 12:19 minutes per game. He has four goals and five assists, which leaves him one point shy of a new career high.

“He works hard, he’s one of the hardest working guys,” Carter Hart said in late November. “You see him on the ice, how tenacious he is, like he’s relentless.”

As RFA last offseason, MacEwen avoided arbitration by signing a one-year, 5,000 contract. He will be RFA again this offseason.

Lemieux, who turns 27 this month, has three assists in 27 games and 8:30 minutes per game for Los Angeles this season.

He is a player who stirs the pot with the opponent and receives penalty minutes. The Flyers will be Lemieux’s fourth team. He made his NHL debut with the Jets and also spent part of three seasons with the Rangers.

As an RFA last offseason, MacEwen avoided arbitration by signing a one-year, $925,000 contract. It will be FRG again this off-season.

The 2014 second-round pick is an unrestricted free agent pending with a cap of $1.350 million. Given his expiring contract, it’s unclear whether he’ll be in the Flyers’ plans past the final 20 games of this season.

Essentially, the Flyers turned a waiver request from last season into a future fifth-round draft pick.
